How to Measure Different Lawn Shapes
Use our guide below to measure the area for common lawn shapes. Refer to our example diagram for visual instructions.
1. Measuring a Rectangular Lawn
To measure a rectangular lawn:
- Step 1: Measure the length and width of the lawn in meters.
- Step 2: Multiply the length by the width to get the area in square meters.
Formula: Length × Width = Area
Example: A lawn measuring 10m (length) by 6m (width) equals 60m².
2. Measuring a Square Lawn
For a square lawn:
- Step 1: Measure the length and width (both will be the same).
- Step 2: Multiply one side by itself to calculate the area.
Formula: Side × Side = Area
Example: A square lawn with each side measuring 5m equals 25m².
3. Measuring a Circular Lawn
To measure a circular lawn:
- Step 1: Measure the radius of the lawn, which is the distance from the center to the edge.
- Step 2: Use the radius to calculate the area with the formula below.
Formula: π × Radius² = Area
Example: For a lawn with a 4m radius, the area is approximately 50.27m².
4. Measuring a Semi-Circular Lawn
For semi-circular lawns:
- Step 1: Measure the radius (distance from the center to the edge).
- Step 2: Calculate the area of a full circle, then divide by 2 to get the semi-circle area.
Formula: (π × Radius²) ÷ 2 = Area
Example: With a radius of 3m, the semi-circular area is approximately 14.14m².
5. Measuring a Triangular Lawn
To measure a triangular lawn:
- Step 1: Measure the length of the base and the height of the triangle (the perpendicular distance from the base to the top point).
- Step 2: Use the measurements to calculate the area with the formula below.
Formula: (Base × Height) ÷ 2 = Area
Example: For a lawn with a base of 6m and height of 4m, the area is 12m².

FAQs on Measuring Your Lawn
Q: What if my lawn shape is irregular?
A: For irregular shapes, divide the lawn into simpler shapes, measure each section, and add the areas together to get a total.
Q: Can I use feet instead of meters?
A: For the most accurate quote, we recommend measuring in meters. However, our calculator can handle both units—just specify which you’ve used.
Q: Do I need special tools to measure my lawn?
A: A standard tape measure works well. If your lawn is large, a measuring wheel may help save time.
